TXRX Engineering provides a full range of engineering and design services for industrial communications, automation, and control.

  • Communication and Control Systems Design

TXRX Engineering has engineering design capabilities in the fields of communications, automation, and control, including:

    • Design of Automation, Control, and SCADA Communications for industrial and utility HV and MV systems (substations, transmission lines, generation facilities, etc.)
    • Design of MV and LV Switchgear Control and Monitoring for industrial systems
    • Design of Fiber Optic Communications Infrastructure (Singlemode and Multimode) for industrial systems
    • Pump Station Control, Monitoring, and SCADA Communications Design for pipeline applications
    • Instrumentation Systems Design for pipeline applications

Each client has its own design methodologies, system operational strategies and best practices, and end-user interfacing requirements. There are both commonalities and large differences between different industries in terms of the approach taken to communications, automation, and control system design. TXRX has experience with a number of different industries, and works to ensure that client expectations for system design and performance are met or exceeded.

  • Systems Architecture Planning/Development

Often, the communications and controls systems scope is considered to be "too detailed" for addressing at the scoping/planning stages of a project. However, it is usually at the detailed design stage that project stakeholders eventually discover that the communications and controls scope desired is no longer feasible to build without excessive cost adders, re-work, and/or other infrastructure modifications (civil, structural, electrical, etc.). Control systems infrastructure needs to be properly integrated into the overall project infrastructure, and therefore needs to be planned at the same time.

TXRX Engineering actively pursues early scope development involvement in projects in order to identify and scope out communications and control system requirements. It becomes our mandate to ensure that the infrastructure required to meet client requirements is accounted for in the planning stages of a project. We have the experience to ask the right questions in the planning stages to determine what the client wants for an end product. This allows clients to make the right decisions to incorporate communications and control system infrastructure into the overall project scope successfully.

  • Legacy Systems Integration

Many capital projects involve adding or retrofitting new equipment into existing plant or process facilities. Integrating the monitoring and control of additional equipment into existing communications and control systems can be challenging to execute:

    • Depending on the age of the existing facilities, system design documentation may be incomplete or non-existent.
    • Reverse-engineering is often required to determine the communications and control systems operation requirements.
    • Original design personnel involved in the construction of existing facilities are likely no longer available to provide insight or guidance.
    • Legacy communications and control systems equipment used in existing facilities may be obsolete or discontinued by manufacturers, and cannot be purchased for new additions or retrofits.
    • Inexperienced project personnel may not be familiar with older communications / control systems technologies.

Determining the best ways to upgrade, retrofit, or add new equipment into existing facilities requires a solid understanding of the design and operation of existing communications and control systems. TXRX Engineering has extensive experience on addition/retrofit projects that require modifications to existing communications and control systems. We understand that it is typically not as simple as copying the existing design and connecting to spare I/O to add new equipment, especially in older installations. We work with clients to understand the full impact of adding new equipment to existing systems, to ensure that the design, operation, and maintenance of the new additions is seamless.

  • Engineering Project Management

TXRX Engineering has diverse experience in all aspects of engineering project management:

    • Conceptual Design / Scope Development
    • Front End Engineering Design (FEED) / Design Basis Memorandum (DBM) Development
    • Engineering Design Specification Development
    • Engineering Detailed Design
    • Procurement and Equipment Specification Development
    • Construction / Commissioning / Start-Up Support
    • Project Change Management
    • Project Scheduling, Reporting, Cost Control

Typically, the communications and automation scope of work is only a subset of a larger project's scope. Because the communications, automation, and control scope of most larger projects is impacted by or impacts so many other stakeholders' scopes, overall project success hinges on successful interfacing with affected stakeholders. TXRX Engineering focuses on interfacing with all project stakeholders to ensure that the communications, automation, and control system design integrates seamlessly with other project scopes of work.

  • Component Configuration/Programming

All communication, automation, and control systems have system components that execute the tasks or functions required of the system. Typical system components include:

    • System Controllers (e.g. PLC's, RTU's, Data Concentrators, Processors)
    • Networking Components (e.g. routers, switches, firewalls, hubs, gateways)
    • End Devices (e.g. relays, transmitters, tranducers, instrumentation systems)
    • System Equipment (e.g. VFD's, UPS's, Soft Starters, motor controllers, monitoring devices)
    • System Monitoring Devices (e.g. HMI's, OPC Nodes, Industrial PCs, terminals)
    • External Control and Monitoring Systems (DCS, SCADA)
    • Protocol or Media Converters (e.g. serial, fiber, Ethernet)

All system components must be configured or programmed with parameters, logic, and/or settings in order to operate as intended. TXRX Engineering has a wide range of experience in programming and configuration of system components. The process of configuration or programming typically parallels the system design process, and each component's configuration/programming capabilities are typically examined during the design process to ensure that they will operate as intended to meet system operational requirements.

  • Field Technical Support / Troubleshooting

TXRX Engineering personnel have extensive experience providing field technical support and troubleshooting to clients. We understand that effective technical support and troubleshooting requires a direct, hands-on approach. Traveling to field locations to tackle any problems or issues directly is just part of what we do.

  • Commissioning/Startup Support

TXRX believes in a strong engineering presence during the commissioning and startup of facilities, to ensure that the client's requirements are fully met. We want to see through our design and engineering efforts so that clients have complete confidence that the systems delivered are exactly what they need to effectively monitor and operate their facilities.
